A quick and easy way to get your resume started can be to use a template. With a template, the basic format of a resume will be set, and you can edit the document to include your personal information.

Free Microsoft Resume Templates

Free Microsoft resume templates are available as a download for Microsoft Word users to use to create a resume or CV. Using a template can reduce the amount of time you have to spend formatting, allowing you to focus on ensuring that the content of your resume shines.

Microsoft Word resume options include basic resumes, job-specific resumes (i.e. banker, computer technician, journeyman electrician) and career-specific resumes (i.e. career change, advanced degree, return to the workforce).

There is also a smaller selection of resumes stored in the Templates section of Microsoft Word.

Tips for Using a Resume Template

Keep it simple. When picking out a template to use, choose a simple template that's easy to edit and format. Fancy formatting and fonts may get lost when you upload or email your resume document.

A basic resume is also easier to read.

Keep it concise. Your resume doesn't need to include everything you ever did. If you have a lengthy employment history, you don't need to include it all. Employers typically don't expect to see more than 10 - 15 years of work experience on a resume.

Check the details. When you're typing or copying and pasting over the content of a template, be sure that you have replaced all the information in it with your own contact information, experience, and education. Double check to make sure that everything on the final version of the resume is about you.

Give it a unique file name. Save your resume with your name as the file name. This way, employers will know who it belongs to. For example, save as firstname.lastname.doc or lastnameresume.doc.

Proofread. Take the time to carefully proofread your resume before you click upload or send. It's a reflection of your credentials, so it's important for it to be perfect.

Begin by opening up a new document in Word by clicking on “New” from the File menu. Once you have opened up the new document menu, you will be able to choose from a large number of templates that are included with the Word software. Click on “Templates” and then select one of the resume templates you see on the page.

    Consider a CV. A curriculum vitae serves the same basic purpose of a resume, but there are different conventions that govern how it is written. The curriculum vitae is a comprehensive list of your job experience from your current or most recent position to your earliest. Unlike the chronological or functional resume, which typically run 1 to 2 pages, the CV is as long as it needs to be to encompass your experience.
    • The CV is commonly used when applying for positions in Europe, and also when applying for positions at colleges and universities worldwide.
