It was $18, and yes, I did have to show ID and fill out the little card.

I bought mine when there was a mugger targeting women at night on the UES last winter. I got all freaked out about it, then realized that I am not a likely target...I carry myself well, walk quickly and am aware of my surroundings, and look like I'll put up a hell of a fight (which I would). If you look 3 feet to my right, there is some dumb 22 year old falling drunkenly out of her shoes. I relaxed a bit, although I still keep it in my pocket and if someone makes me uncomfy, I put my hand in my pocket pre-emptively.
(c) The department of health, with the cooperation of the division of criminal justice services and the superintendent of state police, shall develop standards and promulgate regulations regarding the type of self- defense spray device which may lawfully be purchased, possessed and used pursuant to this paragraph. Absent any such direction the forms shall be maintained on the premises of the vendor and shall be open at all reasonable hours for inspection by any peace officer or police officer, acting pursuant to his or her special duties. No more than two self-defense spray devices may be sold at any one time to a single purchaser. Last edited by mathjak107; 02-29-2012 at 04:13 AM..

I was once pepper sprayed in the bus from a very close distance.

The spray is comprised of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), a potent extract form the chili pepper. When sprayed into the eyes, this agent causes a burning sensation on the eyes and skin and temporary blindness. Eyes clamp shut and throat inflammation causes coughing and difficulty breathing.

The intensity or "hotness" of your pepper spray is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

Ensure your pepper spray canister is designed to reduce wind blowback. A direct spray should have no effect on bystanders.

Always consult product information for specifics about your pepper spray. Most pepper sprays are deployed with the use of a simple finger grip dispenser, but others come with a firearm-inspired trigger for ease of use. A molded finger lock and handle provides a secure grip while spraying.

Consult product information to learn about a canister’s spray method.

This concentrated agent, derived from chili pepper extract, is injected into a canister and sprayed in an attacker’s face as a non-lethal, non-toxic crime deterrent. While most pepper spray comes in liquid-spray form, some brands manufacture it as a gel. Carry along your pepper spray in a pocket, purse or on your keychain.

Shop pepper spray from trusted brands like Mace®, SABRE® and Ruger®. Shop all top-rated styles, including pink pepper spray.

Pepper sprays are formulated for different purposes. Some are intended for use on people, while others are meant to deter an animal attack and include bear pepper spray.

Think about how you will carry your pepper spray canister. Many cans come in a compact case or holster that is attached to your keychain. Cyclists can attach a can to the top tube of their bike. Some canisters come equipped with a disorienting LED strobe light, while others spray a UV dye to mark an attacker for later identification.

14. Possession in accordance with the provisions of this paragraph of a self-defense spray device as defined herein for the protection of a person or property and use of such self-defense spray device under circumstances which would justify the use of physical force pursuant to article thirty-five of this chapter.
(a) As used in this section "self-defense spray device" shall mean a pocket sized spray device which contains and releases a chemical or organic substance which is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air or any like device containing pepper or similar disabling agent. But I remember the young doctor consulted an eye care specialist over the phone. I remember a nurse whiping my eyes with some tissues maybe it's possible that I got some medication orally also. I've heard that sometimes they pour milk in your eyes.

A guy who has worked in the security field told me that there's always the possibility some might get an allergic reaction from the spray and your're in for a whole lot of legal hassle.

So all I can say is that pin pointed accurately from a close distance it worked atleast on me.

I've also heard those stories that on some "it doesn't just work they get even crazier" but without providing anything of substance to back up this claim. No hassle. It costs between 12 to 25$. Just stop by and ask them. They'll be happy to show you verity of options, sizes, and colors. I just bought
for my gf yesterday. good luck.

in nyc without a copy of the proper form from an authorized seller it can be a criminal offense carrying it. i would guess at misdemeanor.

I think it's also good as a deterrent--whether or not you actually use it, your typical thug who sees a single female who is carrying something like that is more likely to pass her on by. Muggers and rapists avoid someone who look as though they're going to put up a fight, make it not easy.

Anyway, I got it at this place:

Uncle Sam's Army Navy Outfitters - Greenwich Village - New York, NY

They didn't have me fill anything out, although I did use a credit card.

your dreaming if you think thats going to be a deterrant.
it also doesnt work on everyone and requires pin point accuaracy to be effective..

if it makes you feel better than carry it but its a false sense of security. heres some interesting reading on the subject
