Write ups that invoke nostalgia are best for college / school magazines. The experiences that students have in college are more or less the same for everyone. From the common hangout spot to the most dreaded professor, all these things are pretty much the same for all students. Although, writing about a professor as being dreaded would be inappropriate for a college magazine but a common hangout spot and experiences that you had there would be like lauding your college and since you share the same sense of pride of being part of it with other college students, such an article would enamor all your readers.

Besides this your experiences could share a moral lesson for life that your college taught you.

Or your first day of college, from how you began from loathing it to swooning over it. When we enter college, its like a dream.

As we take the first step to our journey, its like you have entered the land to ecstacy. All that you have ever heard about college life is going to come true. The tiring school days are over and its a new phase, the best phase of life.

Fast forward to a few days and the bubble has been broken by incessant schedules and nearing exams. You don't have time for all those experiences, its so hard to keep track of all that is going on. Initially you used to discuss and share this with your school time best friend but slowly you loose touch due to busy schedules. Life could'nt be more miserable, this is vicious. But then you find someone, to share these preposterous experiences. This is someone who doesn't just listen but experiences all those things with you. You connect instantly. And within no time, you have a gang. A college gang! Really! And you are a part of it! This is perfect!

Time flies during good times and you are in your final year, at 2 am sitting in your dorm room with your friends turned family you reminiscent the best days of your life. A realization, that yeah actually, all those things that you heard about college life, are true. Infact, reality is better!

An article for a college magazine could be about anything, even if its not related to your college or student life and is just a hot potato in the news or your struggle to success. What matters it that, you frame it in a reader friendly way, where all your fellow students nod their heads with you.

If it’s any consolation, schools don’t want a long essay. Before the 2011 college admission season began, the Common Application decreed that essays could not exceed 500 words.

Some students and counselors squawked, but I think the word-count ceiling is a good thing. Frankly, most teenagers don’t know how to write a compelling admission essay that’s short, much less one that is 750 or 1,000 words or more. I admit that I have no statistics to back this up, but I have read many college essay drafts and most of them have ranged from horrible to is this really the best you can do?
