Tax Q&A

In order to be considered a resident in another state for tuition purposes, I cannot be claimed on my parents taxes for two years. I was not claimed on the 2007 but how do we amend the 2006 taxes so I am not claimed as a dependent. Also, once the taxes are amened, will my parent received a new tax return notice that does not claim me as a dependent?

  1. Overtaxe Says:

you can’t just decide that you weren’t a dependent. if they file an amended return now, they are playing with fire–just asking for an audit. dependency is based on facts, not on what you want. the facts that are relevant are who provides the support, (assuming you passed the age tests.) forget it and quit trying to cheat the taxpayers of the state where you attend school.
