World War 1 Summary

World War 1 was a global war, which started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on the 28th of July 1914. This war predicted to be over soon, began spreading to other countries and instantly Germany, Russia, Great Britin and France were all fighting for their allies side's in this suddenly monstrous war. The war continued for four long years of hardship and suffering.

How did WW1 start?

World War 1 started when a man named Gavrilo Princip killed the Austro-Hungarian Duke Franz Ferdinand. Austro-Hungary then threatened Serbia to give up the killer or they would declare war. But the Serbians didn't know who had killed the duke so they did nothing. Russia threatened Austro-Hungary not to invade, in turn the German Empire threatened Russia and Britain and France threatened Germany as Britain and France had a treaty with Russia. This explains how World War 1 became a World War, and also shows how treaties and allies can pull many countries into a war like a domino effect.

The Western Front

The Western Front, was opened by the German forces. It was a 700 kilometer series of trenches from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border. Initially the point of this trench system was to flank the enemy, but the French also kept on building trenches, until there was no land left.

They start off during training in Pennsylvania, then Texas and finally from France. He was killed in action during the Meuse-Argon offensive on November 5th, 1918. I've got the telegram from the War Department (received 2 weeks after the war was over) and a letter from his Commanding Officer. He's buried in France. I could try to scan them as jpg files and email them to you. He was so excited, at first, before he left the states. He talks a lot about what he wants to do when he gets home and he mentions a girlfriend he kept secret from the family. Toward the end, in France, he just wanted things to end. I have seen men with no arms or legs. Breathless bodies are all over the place. I miss my family so much. I hope Momma, Poppa, and Little Sarah are okay. Oh yeah, and my girlfriend Louise. She says that she is working in a factory now. I miss her so much. It is very chilly outside. My limbs are weak and it is painful to walk. The living conditions here are very poor. ...read more.

You can feel death in the air. Every single hour, someone I know is dead. This is truly not the experience I thought it would be. -Jeremiah Watts Christmas Day, 1914 It was Christmas yesterday! The events that took place yesterday seemed so unreal. It was unbelievable! When I awoke there were no rifles firing from the Germans and it was very quiet. I kept waiting for the Germans to secretly attack but there was nothing. I was hoping for the best because it was Christmas and I wanted to enjoy the holiday, however, I was expecting the worst. ...read more.

This last week was one of the worst experiences in my life. My best friend William was injured in a battle a few days ago.

I saw hundreds of soldiers lying in a ditch, gasping for air. This green gas turned their buttons green and their bodies were “boursouflé”. I was very scared but I knew I had to be strong for my fellow soldiers, my country, my family and myself. We tried our best. We really did. Despite our efforts thousands of our soldiers died. - Jeremiah Watts ...read more.
