SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT – II, 2012

 SCIENCE

Class – IX 

General Instructions :

(i) The question paper comprises of two Sections, A and B. You are to attempt both the sections.

(ii) All questions are compulsory.

(iii) There is no overall choice. However, internal choice has been provided in all the five questions of five marks category. Only one option in such questions is to be attempted.

(iv) All questions of Section-A and all questions of Section-B are to be attempted separately.

(v) Question numbers 1 to 3 in Section-A are one mark questions. These are to be answered in one word or in one sentence.

(vi) Question numbers 4 to 7 in Section-A are two marks questions. These are to be answered in about 30 words each.

(vii) Question numbers 8 to 19 in Section-A are three marks questions. These are to be answered in about 50 words each.

(viii) Question numbers 20 to 24 in Section-A are five marks questions. These are to be answered in about 70 words each.

(ix) Question numbers 25 to 42 in Section-B are multiple choice questions based on practical skills. Each question is a one mark question. You are to select one most appropriate response out of the four provided to you. 

SECTION – A 

1. An element X has a valency 3. Write the formula of its oxide. 

2. Name the term which is used for the following :

(i) The left and right halves of the body have the same design.

(ii) Animal tissue differentiate from the three embryonic germ layers. 

3. What is Smog ?

4. An animal is dorsoventrally flattened, has three embryonic germ layers and is acoelomate. Which phylum does it belong to ? What are they commonly called ? Give one example.

5. Name the causal organism of AIDS. Why a person suffering from AIDS cannot fight even very minor infections ?

6. The volume of 50g of a substance is 20cm3. If the density of water is 1 g cm-3, will the substance float or sink in water ? Justify your answer.

7. List two conditions which need to be satisfied for the work to be done on an object ?

8. What are isotopes ? Write 3 isotopes of hydrogen. Why do isotopes show similar chemical properties ?

9.(a) Explain Bohr and Bury rules for distribution of electrons into different shells.

(b) Draw the electronic structure of element X with atomic number 17 and element Y with atomic number 16 ? 

10. Differentiate between Bryophyta and Pteridophyta. Give one example of each.
