    You can eliminate orphans and widows, words or single lines of text that become separated from the other lines in a paragraph. Orphans fall at the bottom of a column or page, and widows fall at the top of a column or page. Another typographic problem to avoid is a heading that stands alone on a page with the following paragraph on the next page. You have several options for fixing widows, orphans, short exit lines, and other paragraph break problems:

    Earlier versions of Word allowed to adjust several values that controlled its behavior re. line and page breaks.

    Since I have a couple of very ugly page breaks in my current document I wanted to adjust these settings to provide more pleasant formatting but I couldn't find any if these settings in Word 2013 any more.

    Are these settings gone, just hard to find (if so: where?) or not meant to be user-adjusted any more?


    BTW: I don't mind fiddling with registry settings, in case that's the only option to tweak these settings...

A widow is the last line of a paragraph left by itself at the top of a page; an orphan is the first line of a paragraph left by itself at the bottom of a page. You will want to avoid both widows and orphans in your documents, as they break up the flow of the text and tend to distract the reader.

    Word allows you to automatically control single-line widows and orphans in your documents. To control widows and orphans in your documents, follow these steps:

    1. Put the insertion point in the paragraph that has either the widow or orphan text.
